"I grew up during the rise of the music video. Many people forget that MTV was not always an
omnipresent entity. Still, in the early 80's, the nascent network was influential. Cable television was not yet ubiqitous, so many local networks wanted to
capitalize on the music video fad. As a result, I would see a mish-mash of different genres on these late night weekend video shows.
Videos from Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, George Michael, Run-DMC, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, and Neil Young could be an average show.
So, at a young age, I learned that music is music. If you like it, does the style matter?
As I grew older, the range of music I listened to expanded. Eventually, I wanted to create music from my own experiences and influences.
However, as an adolescent, my priorities turned to girls and parties. By the time I was an adult, I worked (most) of that out of my system, and I got with a few friends and
formed a band. Since I couldn't play an instrument, I became the singer. In that band, I was fortunate to be able to meet, work, and
create with some great and talented people, and I tried to absorb as much as possible from them.
With Marienkind, my aim is to integrate many of my influences, be they musical, literary, or visual, into one coherent expression.
Today, we are all blessed with the gift of technology, specifically, home computing. PC's (and Mac's) have progressed to a level only few
dreamed of, and fewer worked towards. Because of those dreamers, we can reach for and work towards our dreams."
